HR Training and Development
Training that gives your managers confidence to lead.
Most HR problems start with a well-intentioned manager who did not know what to do. We run bespoke training for managers and business owners that builds the skills and confidence to handle people situations correctly from the start.

Bespoke training for your business
Off-the-shelf training programmes cover general principles. They are useful, but they do not reflect your specific context, your policies, your industry, or the situations your managers are actually dealing with.
We design and deliver training that is built around your business. We look at the issues coming up in your team, the gaps we have identified through our work with you, and the specific skills your managers need to develop. The result is training that is practical, relevant, and immediately usable.
Training can be delivered as a one-off session, a series, or as part of a broader management development programme. We work with individual managers, small teams, or your whole management group, in person or remotely.
What we cover
Our training covers the full range of people management topics. The most commonly requested areas are:
- Employment law essentials for managers: what managers need to know, what they need to avoid, and when to ask for help
- Running a fair disciplinary or grievance process: the stages, the paperwork, the right to be accompanied, and what to do when it gets complicated
- Difficult conversations: how to raise performance concerns, give honest feedback, and handle sensitive conversations without making things worse
- Managing sickness absence: return-to-work interviews, FIT notes, trigger points, and when to escalate
- Performance management and appraisals: how to set objectives, give meaningful feedback, and build a documented record that supports the business
- Diversity and equality: the Equality Act, protected characteristics, unconscious bias, and building an inclusive team
- Neurodiversity in the workplace: what managers need to understand, how to approach performance or conduct concerns when a condition may be a factor, and how to have the right conversations
- The new Employment Rights Act: what has changed, what it means for managing new starters, and why documentation matters more than ever
Employment law webinars for all clients
All Advice and Support clients receive access to our bi-annual employment law webinar, where we walk through what has changed in employment law and what it means for businesses like yours. We also bring in guest speakers who can offer wider perspective on running and growing your business.
These sessions are designed to be practical, not theoretical. The aim is to leave you and your managers more confident, not more anxious.
The business case for investing in your managers
The cases we are called in on most often share a common thread. A manager noticed something was wrong weeks or months before the situation escalated. They did not say anything because they were not sure what to say, or they were worried about getting it wrong, or they hoped it would resolve itself.
Training does not eliminate difficult situations. It gives managers the tools to catch them earlier, handle them more confidently, and create a documented record that protects the business. That is a better outcome for the employee, for the manager, and for you.
In a small business, every manager's capability directly affects your exposure. One manager who avoids difficult conversations can create a situation that costs tens of thousands of pounds and months of distraction to resolve. Training is a far cheaper investment.
What is HR training and development?
HR training and development covers the skills, knowledge, and confidence that managers and business owners need to manage their people effectively and within the law. It is distinct from general business training in that it focuses specifically on the people management dimension: employment law, fair process, difficult conversations, performance management, and the situations that cause the most anxiety.
For small businesses, training is often the piece that gets overlooked. Managers are promoted because they are good at their jobs, not because they have been taught how to manage people. The result is a team of well-meaning managers who avoid difficult conversations, get processes wrong, and create problems that are expensive to unpick.
Good training does not turn managers into HR professionals. It gives them the confidence to handle the situations they will actually face, and the awareness of when to pick up the phone to us.
